In general, the wish is to have a pier that does not have to be removed for the winter. A year-round pier that winters in the ice is possible, but it usually requires certain characteristics from the shore.

First of all, it is important to find out how the ice behaves at the time of ice departure. Does it flow over to the beach or is there a large opening of lake or sea in front of the beach, which might move the ice in the spring. The two above-mentioned situations are typical for causing movement of piers.

If there is no major movement of ice on the shore, the pier can be left in place for the winter, or a fixed pier that is permanently in place can be made on the shore. If the beach destination is new and there is no experience with the behavior of ice in the spring, you may be able to get an indication of what kind of pier works on the beach from the neighbors' piers.

Naturally, the weather on the ice departure days in spring is not always the same. There are years when the ice melts calmly in the sun and sometimes (fortunately less often) it is spring, like the year 2021, when solid 15-meter concrete pontoon piers weighing up to ten tons had been lifted by the ice to the high embankments across.

On the author's own beach in Taipalsaari, Saimaa, there is a large opening of lake in front of the beach, and from there the ice flows over about once every ten years. I have made a conscious decision that I don't want to dismantle and reassemble the pier in spring and fall, but rather repair and adjust the fixed pole pier once every ten years. The poles can also be fully renewed in a day if necessary.

In most locations, you can correct the movements caused by the fixed pier with a small adjustment. Hit the adjusted posts back deep with a sledgehammer and the pier will do well again.

Changes in the height of the water level are not an obstacle for a year-round fixed or pontoon pier. The height of the deck of the fixed pier is measured according to the level of the highest surface level, and the pontoon pier is always at its height according to the water level.
