When talking about piers, there is sometimes a perception that a pontoon pier is the only way to make a pier. A pontoon pier is indeed a good option for many beaches and sometimes even the only reasonable solution, but not all piers are pontoon piers.

A pontoon pier is considered a good option, for example, when you want the height of the deck of the pier to always be at the same level with respect to the height of the water surface. When floating, the pontoon dock adapts to the level of the water surface.

Another reason for choosing a pontoon pier may be that on the shore the ice packs up on the shore, so the pier needs to be lifted to the shore for the winter. Pontoon piers can usually be dismantled and moved in parts to the beach for the winter.

A pontoon pier is also a good choice when the shore is deeper than normal, i.e. more than 2.5 meters deep. Alternatively, the bottom of the beach can be so soft and immersive, as for example in swamps and marshes, that pole or trestle pier solutions are not suitable for the beach.

One of the characteristics of pontoon docks is that they always sway a bit when floating in waves. If you prefer a completely stable pier, you can alternatively put a trestle pier , the cover elements of which can be lifted off in the fall, floated to the shore and pulled on the shore for the winter.

Most beaches, however, are suitable for a pier standing stably with strong poles, and the owners of even slightly more challenging beaches often decide that they would rather do a little straightening of the poles in the spring after the ice has left, than to dismantle and reassemble the pontoon pier every autumn and spring.
