A long pier to a shallow shore

It is often necessary to choose a long pier for a shallow shore. When choosing the type of foundation for a long pier, it is essential to find out how the ice behaves in the spring when the ice breaks up. If the ice doesn't compact or move more and the beach is usually protected from strong storms, you can choose a more worry-free fixed pier with log posts. If there is ice packing and movement on the beach in the spring, it may be necessary to choose either a pontoon pier or a trestle pier, both of which can be lifted on the shore fairly easily for the winter.

Below is an example of a long pier to a shallow shore - Pitkospuu Kesänki 31.5 m model with trestle foundation in Hvitträsk, Kirkkonummi.

Fixed log post piers and trestle piers have the advantage of not moving. A floating pontoon pier always moves a bit in the waves, while a fixed pier is stable above the waves.

If the surface level of the water body varies a lot during the summer, the range of variation must be taken into account when installing the fixed pier, and the installation is made with dimensions according to the height of the highest water level. You don't have to do this on a pontoon pier because the pier automatically adjusts to the water level. On a low shore where the water level fluctuates a lot, it can happen in autumn that a large part of the pier's pontoons are on dry land when the water line recedes and the water level drops. The bottom of the pontoons at the water's edge may then rub against the bottom rocks in the waves, which may damage the pontoons. If this happens, pontoons can be patched with the intended repair compound.
