Often Finnish cottage beaches are gently sloping. There are many beaches where even a pier over 30 meters long is not too long. During low water, even such a long pier may be almost on dry land. If the height variation of the water body is large, the need for a long pier is even more emphasized on the gently deepening shore.
If the dock is not long enough, it can be a challenge with the boat and the outboard motor in the late fall when they might touch the bottom. It's also nice to be able to go swimming normally from the dock during the entire cottage season.
One of the reasons for building a long pier is also the beautifully opening view of the back of the lake, for example past the reeds. At the same time, you have a good view of your own shore from the end of the long pier. At the end of the long pier, it's nice to sit on a summer evening and enjoy the atmosphere of the lake.
